Back in 1988 if you wanted a distributed back office system for a mid-sized enterprise, you might start by laying an ARCNET network – use it to link 50 Datapoint 2200 mini-computers together, each with 12 RS232 ports relaying serial data to Point Of Sale terminals across the country. Author your business logic in COBOL, load it onto your 40MB CDC disk drive and away you go. When the sun went down, your nightshift would arrive and visit each of your 50 Datapoint computers in turn, rebooting them for the nightly batch run. After much manual intervention during the night and with a fair wind, come the morning you’d have a fresh batch of invoices ready to post and your accounts would be correct.
That was where our journey began and the intervening years have taught us much. Thankfully today we don’t have ARCNET but Cloud Computing and our language of choice isn’t COBOL, but C# with the .Net framework. However, understanding where we have come from helps us to better understand where we are now - and where we’re going.
When we embark on a new project, we’re not just drawing on our recent experience, but on years of learning and instinct.
